Proofreading Checklist   arrow

  • Double check facts, figures, Web site addresses, phone numbers and the spelling of names.
  • The press release follows Associate Press style, which is outlined in the CAPStyle manual.
  • Eliminate cliches and empty phrases.
  • Read the copy aloud to ensure that it flows smoothly.
  • Check that the copy explains who, what, when, where, why and how, and is easy to understand.
  • Replace abstract words with concrete ones.
  • Eliminate jargon and technical terms.
  • Use strong verbs.
  • Keep paragraphs to less than eight typewritten lines.
  • Have someone not familiar with the topic proofread the copy.
