Adams County 4-H Dog Project

The 4-H dog project provides an opportunity to handle, groom, care for, and learn about dogs. Project participants will learn responsibility, communication, and the importance of keeping accurate records.

Project Information and Requirements

We recommend buying or borrowing the Dog Resource Handbook. Participants should also read the General Rules, Livestock, Equine & Small Animal Rules, and 4-H Dog sections of the Fair Premium Book.

Exhibition Requirements

Dog Project members who intend to exhibit their animal(s) at the Adams County Fair must complete the following:

  • Enroll in the Dog Project in 4-H Online
  • Complete and submit an Animal Care and Housing Form to the 4-H office by May 1
  • Vaccinate your dog(s) for:
    • Rabies
    • Parvo Virus
    • Distemper
    • Highly recommended: Bordetella
  • Identify all dogs in 4-H Online by May 1
    • Required in 4-H Online:
      • Animal name
      • Animal birth date
      • Color and markings
      • Sex
      • Upload:
        • Photo of rabies tag or proof of rabies vaccination from the office of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Must include date administered and expiration date.
        • Photo of proof of other vaccinations to include parvo and distemper from the office of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Must include date administered and expiration date.
        • Note: If your dogs’ vaccinations expire before the Adams County Fair Dog Show, you will be asked to submit updated vaccination records
        • Optional in 4-H Online:
          • Photos
          • Breed
          • Weight
  • Keep record of your dog project in the Dog Record Book available for download on the Colorado 4-H website
  • Present an up-to-date Dog Record Book (also called e-record) with a green record book cover at Record Book Interviews
  • Enter fair classes on the Fair Entry website by July 1
  • Complete and turn in the Dog Record Book with a green cover by Friday before Labor Day to the Extension Office.

Dog Practices are held regularly at the Fairgrounds.
