Extension Updates

To assure that all of you are kept up to date on a regular basis, the three regional directors and the state Extension Administration Office provides bi-weekly Extension Updates. This forum is for all Extension announcements, so if you have something to distribute, please forward it to Lori Bates with FOR EXTENSION UPDATE noted.

November 14, 2013

On Behalf of JoAnn Powell:

Greetings all,

Enjoyed seeing you all at Forum. Hope you found the new format useful and that you were able to update content and renew relationships across Extension while you were here on campus. Below is a table of contents that will help you navigate.

The news this past week has likely prompted many individuals who have not thought a great deal about culture, diversity and the lenses through which we see others and their actions to spend some time doing so. I know these topic came up at my own breakfast table this last week.

  • The Miami Dolphins received scrutiny for player relationships—what was said, texted, done and not done by players and leaders within the team’s locker room. Allegations include bullying, harassment, and hazing to “that’s just the way it is if you want to play in the NFL.”
  • Colorado College chose to include the term “queer” as a gender choice on its application for employment. While the school acknowledges the term "queer" is often used as a slur, the school's office of Minority and International Students notes in its definition, "Others have reclaimed it and are comfortable using it to describe themselves."
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts, a gritty military-themed video game, surpassed one billion dollars in sales the day after its launch. This version of the game is the first to include female avatars—you can now play (and fight) as a girl—with all the same tools and skills as any other warrior in the game. This release aligns with the movement of our own female soldiers closer to frontline duty.

Lots of food for thought. I am interested in learning how my millennial generation daughters and their cousins see these events compared to my silent generation dad, aunts and uncles and boomer siblings. May be an interesting Thanksgiving dinner. Wishing you and yours the best of a Thanksgiving holiday.

Extension Programming - Jan Carroll and PLT

As announced by Lou and presented during Forum, Planning and Reporting Units (PRUs) are replacing our previous Program Area/Work Team structure for 2014. Every PRU will use the same common outputs, and create its own limited list of outcomes.

Everyone (agents, specialists) is invited to every meeting. Please think about your work in your location in 2014, and make certain your stakeholder input and intended outcomes will be included in one of the PRU plans of work, along with a strategy for evaluation. The plans—PRU and Plan to Invest—are your only key to easy and accurate reporting, so hopefully no one will skip this step.

Your expenses in attending the meeting(s) will be paid by PLT, so there should be no travel costs to you or your department or county. A calendar of the PLT meetings is posted at www.ext.colostate.edu/ext-news/pru-calendar.xlsx.

Please log into CPRS and be certain your data are complete, through October, as this information will help PRUs build on success and more easily simplify their lists of possible outcomes.

Watch the home screen in CPRS and also you e-mail for notification when new information/calendar/FAQs are posted. Please send your program questions to PRU convener(s) for discussion at the meeting(s). Check with Jan (970-491-6102) on process and with Joy (970-491-3887) on technology.

Thank you to all the members of PLT, all the WT Leaders and agents who provided input, and especially to CJ and Cary who are tenacious in their belief that our planning and reporting systems can be better.

Emerald Ash Borer

While the Emerald Ash Borer is an insect no one wants to have, Extension has emerged as the resource for information, identification, and education regarding this pest in Colorado. Yesterday Boulder County and some adjacent areas were quarantined by the Colorado Department of Agriculture—meaning that no untreated ash trees (genus Fraxinus), plant parts, chips, or cut wood can be moved outside the boundary. Thanks to our Entomology and Horticulture Agents and Specialists for stepping up and working with our communities and partners (CDA and USDA/APHIS) to inform stakeholders and spread information. A special shout out to Carol O’Meara and the Boulder team for providing local leadership.

See the Denver Post article at www.denverpost.com/business/ci_24509610/emerald-ash-borer-puts-colorado-alert.

Information on the pest is available at www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/Emerald_borer.pdf.

Joanne Littlefield is serving as the Public Information Officer for the Emerald Ash Borer situation—as such, any new materials or press releases must be channeled through Joanne to be vetted by the partners before they are used.

Extension Apparel - Joanne Littlefield

If you were at Forum last week, you may have picked up a copy of the new online ordering form for apparel. It is posted online here: www.ext.colostate.edu/staffres/order-form.pdf, from this page: www.ext.colostate.edu/staffres/market.html.

This is an exciting new venture with Crider and Company, and has been approved by CSU External Relations.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this.
