Seeds and seed mixtures
Seeds and seed mixtures are sold directly through the Gilpin Extension office. Please contact us to make an appointment to purchase seeds. We accept cash and check.
Generally the best time to seed is in the late fall, just before the first significant snowfall. Preparing the soil:
- Incorporate 1-3 inches of compost into soil, especially on newly installed leach fields
- Loosen soil to a depth of 3-4 inches with a rake or shovel
- For even sowing, mix the seed in a bucket with moist sand. Use a ratio of 2 parts seed, 1 part sand
- Spread seeds and then rake the seeds to cover with soil
- Soil contact is critical. Lightly walk over, or tamp down the area just seeded.
