{"id":611,"date":"2026-02-17T17:25:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T17:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/extension.colostate.edu\/gilpin\/?post_type=resource-cpt&#038;p=611"},"modified":"2026-02-17T17:25:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T17:25:18","slug":"high-and-dry-garden","status":"publish","type":"resource-cpt","link":"https:\/\/extension.colostate.edu\/gilpin\/resource\/high-and-dry-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"High and Dry Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group wp-block-pattern-longform-content is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-fe9cc265 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group wp-block-pattern-quick-facts has-gray-50-background-color has-background is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-fe9cc265 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quick Facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High and Dry Gardens show how residential landscapes can be established with little to no supplemental irrigation by relying primarily on natural rainfall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gardens feature mostly native Rocky Mountain xeric plants and serve as ongoing demonstration and research sites to learn what thrives under \u201cno water\u201d conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CSU Extension employees and Master Gardener volunteers design and maintain three locations, including sites in Gilpin County, San Miguel County, and Telluride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>The High and Dry Gardens were created in response to the drought experienced by most of the state of Colorado in recent years, and to the \u201cpermanent\u201d watering restrictions that people with wells have to face \u2013 State Water Law permits no outside watering if a well was put in after May 8, 1972 on lots under 35 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of these demonstration and research gardens is to demonstrate to the public the possibility of establishing a landscape only on natural rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the plants used in the High and Dry Gardens are native to the Rocky Mountain region and all are xeric. We hope the High and Dry Gardens will promote the use of native, xeric plant species in the residential landscape.
