On, Thursday, July 9th, Morgan County Fair held their annual 4-H Cake Decorating Contest. For this contest, 4-H members were asked to bake a cake before the contest and then decorate it while the judge observed them. We had 5 amazing participants this year!

For Unit 1 cake decorators, they are focused on making sure that their icing completely covers the cake and goes on smoothly. They cannot use tips to decorate yet, so they get to choose candies and other edible items to decorate their cake. Coming in third in the Unit 1 Junior division was Angeleigh Ashlock with her galaxy cake. The reserve champion was Brody Bristol with his ladybug cake. Taya Flock was the Until 1 Junior champion and she made a lake cake.

For Unit 2 cake decorators, members move beyond candy decorations and begin learning to decorate with icing. They use decorating bags and tips to create borders, flowers, stars, shells, and other basic piping techniques. Judges look for smooth icing, neat decorating, consistent piping, and an attractive finished cake. Our second place Unit 2 Intermediate cake decorator was Maura Walter with her orange flower and honeybee cake. The Unit 2 Intermediate Champion was Natalie Higgins, who made a sunflower cake.

Brody Bristol was the Junior Overall Reserve Grand Champion and Taya Flock was the Junior Overall Grand Champion. Maura Walter was the Intermediate Overall Reserve Grand Champion and Natalie Higgins was the Intermediate Grand Champion.
