A countdown echoed across the launch field Wednesday at the Morgan County Fair as 4-H members put months of work to the test during the annual Model Rocketry competition. One by one, homemade rockets soared into the sky, marking the culmination of a project that combines science, engineering, and hands-on learning.

Each participant designed, built, and launched a model rocket as part of the 4-H Model Rocketry project. The event challenged members to demonstrate not only quality construction but also safe launch procedures and successful flight performance.

Four youth competed in the Unit 1 Junior division. Tate Arndt claimed the Unit 1 Junior championship and was also named the Junior Grand Champion after a successful launch and strong overall performance. Luke Lambert earned second place in the class and was selected as the Junior Reserve Grand Champion. Rylee Larson placed third, while Parker Moorhead finished fourth.

In the Unit 3 Junior division, Jace Lambert earned the championship title with a well-executed flight.

Thomas Kindvall served as judge for the 2026 competition. Participants were evaluated on the craftsmanship and construction of their rockets, their adherence to range safety procedures, and the performance of each rocket during flight. Judges looked for stable flight, proper parachute deployment, and a safe landing as part of the overall scoring.

The Model Rocketry project gives 4-H members the opportunity to apply STEM principles while developing problem-solving skills, precision, and attention to detail. For many participants, the launch day is the highlight of months spent planning, building, and testing their rockets.

Champion winners earned the opportunity to represent Morgan County at the Colorado State Fair Rocket Fly Contest on Sunday, Aug. 23, in Pueblo, where they will compete against top 4-H model rocketry members from across Colorado.
