4-H Cake Decorating Project
The Colorado 4‑H Cake Decorating Project helps youth develop baking abilities and creative decorating techniques.
- Units 1–3 introduce the basics, including single‑ and double‑layer cakes, simple frostings, and beginner piping tips.
- Units 4–6 expand to character pans, themed cookies and cupcakes, and fun cake shapes for members ages 11–18.
- Units 7–9 teach more advanced skills such as floral designs, borders, side decorations, and working with fondant for youth 14 and older.
- Units 10–12 guide participants through tiered cakes, advanced embellishments, mold use, and independent design work.
Experienced decorators can also explore potential careers in baking and may enter Cake Decorating contests at the county or state level.

SLV Area Clubs
The San Luis Valley Area has several 4-H clubs that coordinate events and help mentor youth members through a variety of 4-H projects. Most clubs meet once a month.

San Luis Valley Cake Decorating Project Details
This project educates on the basic knowledge of cake decorating.
You must complete a cake decorating project according to state fair requirements along with a
completed record book.
Requirements:
- Attend 2 projects meetings.
- Record book in a 3-ring folder will need to accompany your project.

Cost:
- Manuals can be printed from Colorado 4-H or purchased at the SLV Extension for $3.00
- Materials can cost $25-$50
