The Colorado 4‑H Gardening Project helps youth learn how plants grow and introduces them to horticulture through a series of progressive units.
- Units 1–3 teach the fundamentals: preparing soil, choosing seeds, using garden tools, starting plants indoors, understanding pollination, practicing crop rotation, managing pests responsibly, harvesting produce, growing herbs, and exploring careers in the food system.
- Unit 4 is designed for members ages 14–18 and moves into advanced skills such as greenhouse management, double cropping, hydroponics, biotechnology, diagnosing plant diseases and deficiencies, using power tools safely, and proper pesticide handling. It also encourages youth to explore careers in botany and plant science.
