4-H Small Engines Project
The Colorado 4‑H Small Engines Project teaches youth how small engines work and helps them develop maintenance and repair skills through hands‑on learning.
- Unit 1 – Crank It Up! introduces beginners to basic engine parts, simple repairs, routine maintenance, and the importance of safety and using manuals correctly.
- Unit 2 – Warm It Up! explores different types of engines, internal components, specialized tools, engine size and compression, and even small business possibilities.
- Unit 3 – Tune It Up! focuses on advanced skills such as engine teardown, rebuilding, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and proper long‑term care.
- Unit 4 – Advanced Small Engines encourages youth to design and complete independent projects, take on junior leadership, and build strong technical and problem‑solving abilities.

SLV Area Clubs
The San Luis Valley Area has several 4-H clubs that coordinate events and help mentor youth members through a variety of 4-H projects. Most clubs meet once a month.

San Luis Valley Small Engines Project Details
This project educates on the basic knowledge of small engines.
You must complete a stand-alone project and display board according to state fair requirements along with a completed record book.
Requirements:
- Attend 2 projects meetings.
- Record book in a 3-ring folder will need to accompany your project.

Cost:
- Manuals can be purchased at SLV Extension or through Shop 4-H (link above) for $5.75
- Boards: $8-10 Walmart/Amazon
- Stand Alone: $50-$300
