4-H Swine Project

The Colorado 4‑H Swine Project teaches youth how to properly raise, feed, and care for pigs while strengthening responsibility, goal‑setting, and record‑keeping skills.

Beginners are introduced to pig anatomy, nutrition, common diseases, animal evaluation, and producing safe, high‑quality pork products. Intermediate members learn more about herd management, exhibiting swine, using technology in production, and improving sportsmanship and public speaking. Advanced participants explore current issues affecting the swine industry, develop leadership abilities, investigate swine‑related careers, and build meaningful friendships through project involvement.

Youth may also take part in Livestock Judging, Livestock Quiz Bowl, and Livestock Skill‑a‑Thon contests.

Preparing for and showing livestock can be an extremely rewarding and educational experience for youth.

The lessons learned in showing and raising livestock are invaluable. However, it can feel very intimidating to begin. This guide is a broad overview at how to prepare for showing market hogs and breeding swine.

All exhibitors are encouraged to ask questions as they
grow through the program. If you have specific breeding questions, please reach out to the Extension Office

If you are doing a breeding swine project, your pig does not get sold.
