Here\u2019s everything you need to know to participate in this exciting competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Animal Origin<\/strong>:<br>The animal you\u2019re showing MUST have been born in&nbsp;<strong>San Miguel<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>West Montrose County<\/strong>&nbsp;(school districts RE2 and R2J).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dam Requirements<\/strong>:<br>The dam (mother) of the animal being shown MUST be a&nbsp;<strong>resident<\/strong>&nbsp;of San Miguel or West Montrose County at least&nbsp;<strong>30 days prior to conception<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Definition of \u201cResident\u201d<\/strong>: The dam must either be part of an established herd within the county or owned by someone who lives in the county.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sire Requirements<\/strong>:<br>The sire (father) of the animal being shown must have physically been in&nbsp;<strong>San Miguel or West Montrose County<\/strong>&nbsp;at the time of conception, or&nbsp;<strong>Artificial Insemination (AI)<\/strong>&nbsp;must be used.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The dam cannot have been taken out of the county to be bred.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Artificial Insemination (AI) and Embryo Transfer<\/strong>:<br>AI and embryo transfer are both recognized methods for herd improvement. However, the rules above still apply.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The embryo must be flushed from a&nbsp;<strong>resident dam<\/strong>&nbsp;of San Miguel or West Montrose County and implanted into a recipient dam within the same county.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Branding<\/strong>:<br>All animals eligible for the County Bred and Fed Contest must be branded with only a&nbsp;<strong>San Miguel or West Montrose County<\/strong>&nbsp;brand (if applicable to the species).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Deadlines and Forms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Exhibitors MUST turn in a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.colostate.edu\/san-miguel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2026\/04\/County-Bred-and-Fed-Proof-of-Eligibility-Form.pdf\">County Bred and Fed form<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0during the initial weigh-in or by the deadline indicated on the form to be eligible to compete in this contest. The form will be available through the\u00a0<strong>County Extension Office<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a tabindex=\"0\" class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/extension.colostate.edu\/san-miguel\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2026\/04\/County-Bred-and-Fed-Proof-of-Eligibility-Form.pdf\">View form<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Show Details<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Contest Timing<\/strong>:<br>The County Bred and Fed class will take place&nbsp;<strong>after the Grand Champion Market Drive<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Top Animal Competition<\/strong>:<br>The top County Bred and Fed animal from each market class will return to the show ring to compete for the&nbsp;<strong>Grand Champion County Bred and Fed<\/strong>&nbsp;title.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eligibility for Grand Champion Market Division<\/strong>:<br>The&nbsp;<strong>Grand and Reserve Champions<\/strong>&nbsp;of the Junior Market divisions&nbsp;<strong>cannot<\/strong>&nbsp;compete in the County Bred and Fed class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Awards and Prizes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A&nbsp;<strong>prize<\/strong>&nbsp;will be awarded to the&nbsp;<strong>Grand Champion County Bred and Fed animal<\/strong>&nbsp;of each species.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Champions<\/strong>&nbsp;will earn the honor to sell&nbsp;<strong>third of their species<\/strong>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<strong>Junior Livestock Sale<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Ready to Compete!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re excited to see your hard work and dedication showcased in the&nbsp;<strong>County Bred and Fed Contest<\/strong>!
