Pueblo County Statewide Horse Clinic
Colorado 4-H horse project members across Colorado benefit from educational opportunities that go beyond their local clubs—especially when preparing for high-stakes events like the state fair or district shows.
The Statewide Horse Clinic was developed to address this need by offering a centralized, hands-on learning experience focused on horsemanship, showmanship, and project knowledge. This clinic also fostered community across counties and age groups, supporting both skill development and connection-building, which are core to long-term engagement in the Colorado 4-H program.
Pueblo County Extension hosted a comprehensive horse clinic that welcomed 4-H members from across the state, offering both mounted and unmounted workshop sessions. Experienced clinicians led instruction in riding techniques, horse care, safety practices, and showmanship.
Participants rotated through structured sessions tailored to multiple experience levels, giving newer members foundational skills while providing advanced riders with coaching to refine their performance. Peer mentorship was encouraged through collaborative exercises, and participants were given opportunities to ask questions, work with new partners, and build confidence.
The clinic was a resounding success, attracting participants from a diverse range of counties and skill levels. First-time attendees expressed increased confidence in their horsemanship, while returning members continued to refine their technique and deepen their understanding of showmanship.
According to post-event surveys, five out of eight respondents strongly agreed that they learned something new, gained confidence in their horse project, and plan to implement newly acquired skills from the clinic. An additional two respondents agreed with all of those statements, reinforcing consistent value across the participant group. Importantly, all respondents reported gaining at least one life skill through the clinic—demonstrating its impact beyond technical learning. The blend of expert instruction, peer collaboration, and structured workshops created an engaging and empowering environment that left participants better prepared for future competition and more connected to the statewide 4-H horse community.
By hosting a centralized clinic, the Colorado 4-H program amplified its commitment to equitable access to quality education and skill-building across Colorado. The clinic empowered youth to deepen their animal science knowledge, build connections beyond their home counties, and demonstrate responsibility, sportsmanship, and growth. These experiences lay the groundwork for long-term involvement in agriculture and civic engagement, supporting a generation of capable and community-minded leaders.
