The topic for September is cover crops. We will discuss what to consider when planting cover crops. Cover crops are a mix of plants grown to protect and improve soil health. They reduce wind and water erosion, boost fertility, increase organic matter, and support soil microbes. Cover crops are not harvested. Cover crops are a mix of legumes, like clover and vetch, grasses, like cereal rye and oats, and radish. Many times, they are planted in fall to protect the soil in winter which mimics the natural ecosystem by keeping soil covered and biologically active. This class is free.
