Join Gilpin County CSU Extension and Gilpin County Parks & Recreation for a FREE Guided Hike Summer Series that explores three areas in the county: Axton Ranch (June 25), Golden Gate Canyon State Park (July 31), and Maryland Mountain (August 27). Hikers will learn about local flowers, trees, and other natural features, log steps, enjoy fresh mountain air, and socialize with neighbors.
Advanced registration is required – please use the REGISTER button above. Specific details about each hike are included below. Attendees are encouraged to plan for the weather, bring water, snacks, and sun protection, and wear comfortable hiking shoes. Dogs are not permitted.
Axton Ranch
Thursday, June 25 – 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Experience an exclusive hike in Denver Mountain Parks’ newest property, not open to the public. This 1.5 mile loop hike is easy and kid friendly. During the hike, we will discuss the history of and future plans for Axton Ranch, as well as learn about plants, trees, and wetland ecosystems. NOTE: Participants will meet at 10:00 am at the Gilpin County Community Center and bus together as a group to the trailhead.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park – Clinton Overlook
Friday, July 31 – 4:30 pm – 7:30pm
Climbing 500 feet to Clinton Overlook, this 3 mile out and back intermediate hike will take approximately 3 hours to complete. Participants will begin and end at the Ole Barn Knoll trailhead on Mountain Base Road. Parking and restrooms are available at the trailhead. NOTE: Participants may choose to meet at 4:00 pm at the Gilpin County Community Center to bus together as a group to the trailhead OR meet at 4:30 pm at Ole Barn Knoll trailhead. All vehicles entering the park are required to display a current Colorado State Parks Pass or current Colorado vehicle registration with the Keep Colorado Wild privilege. Colorado disabled veterans displaying Colorado Disabled Veteran (DV) license plates are admitted free without a pass. Maryland Mountain – Hidden Treasure

The hiker-only Summit trail is a 3-mile intermediate trail that climbs 900 feet in elevation to the panoramic summit of Maryland Mountain. This out and back hike will take approximately 3 hours to complete. Attendees will meet at the trailhead; restrooms are available at the parking area.
