Grounded in 4-H: Murdoch’s president still uses 4-H skills
Growing up in northeastern Montana – raising and showing sheep and steer – 4-H was a big part of Chris Odegard’s daily life, and in many ways it still is.
“4-H shaped the foundation of my life by teaching me hard work, leadership, and community.”
Now Odegard is surrounded by the tools and traditions of agriculture every day, as President for Murdoch’s Ranch and Home Supply. Murdoch’s first store opened in 1994 and now has more than 2,300 team members in 47 stores across six states, as well as the company’s e-commerce website.
Without question, Chris Odegard’s job is a big one, and he says participating in 4-H taught him skills – and imparted strengths and values – that he brings to his professional and personal life every day.
“I still remember the challenge of working with a stubborn steer—an experience that tested my courage and taught me perseverance,” Odegard said, remembering the intense challenge and the hard work that led up to sale day.
“Making it through the fair and the sale ring felt like a miracle, and it proved that grit can carry you through anything. Caring for those animals and completing those projects instilled values that helped me put myself through college and pay for every vehicle I’ve ever owned.”

As a company, Murdoch’s relationship with 4-H dates back more than 20 years. The company says there are former 4-H members, and current youth 4-H’ers like those in Colorado, who are playing roles in the success of Murdoch’s community partnerships and youth development programs.
Murdoch’s support of Colorado 4-H comes in many shapes, from providing college scholarships and supporting the 4-H State Conference, to providing discount cards and fundraising opportunities that benefit 4-H.
“Today, I’m proud of Murdoch’s support of 4-H and the youth who will one day lead us through the world’s next challenges,” Chris Odegard said, reflecting on the path that led him to a college degree, a job on the sales floor at Murdoch’s, and eventually working his way up to holding the reins of a large retail company. He says it’s a clear example of the lasting impact of participating as a youth in 4-H has had throughout his life.
“These programs don’t just teach skills—they build character, resilience, and leaders for the future.”
