Fostering Civic Dialogue and Trust Through Community Conversations in Larimer County
Communities thrive when residents feel heard, respected, and connected to decision-making processes. In Larimer County, Colorado, language barriers, systemic complexity, and limited engagement opportunities can prevent meaningful participation, particularly for underrepresented residents. Creating structured, inclusive spaces for open dialogue is key to ensuring equitable access to civic life.
Colorado State University Extension facilitated two Community Conversations in Larimer County to promote dialogue between community members and local leaders. These workshops were based on Civic Learning Lab principles, using a curriculum that focuses on asking powerful questions, navigating systemic barriers, and building collaborative skills.
The first conversation gathered 39 participants and featured a panel of local decision-makers, allowing community members to ask direct questions and share lived experiences. A second session followed with 24 participants, offering deeper engagement and reflection. Interpretation services were provided at both events to ensure that all voices could be heard regardless of language preference.
Participants explored the role of questions in driving understanding, uncovering solutions, and fostering collaboration. Through guided activities and open discussion, community members developed skills in inquiry, communication, and perspective-taking.
Participants left the workshops with increased confidence in engaging with local systems, a deeper understanding of shared concerns, and a renewed sense of agency in their communities.

By fostering inclusive civic dialogue, CSU Extension supports stronger relationships between residents and local institutions. When communities are equipped with tools for engagement and offered spaces for shared learning, decision making becomes more equitable, transparent, and responsive to local needs.
