Meat Quality Assurance certification events help educate, prepare the next generation of livestock producers

Livestock production is a cornerstone of Elbert County’s agricultural economy, and youth participation in market animal projects is essential to developing the next generation of producers. Many youth require foundational knowledge in animal care, food safety, and ethical production practices to meet industry standards and ensure successful project outcomes.

Colorado State University Extension in Elbert County coordinated and delivered two county-wide Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) certification events in an accessible, open-house format. Youth participants completed required skill stations, engaged with species superintendents, and demonstrated knowledge in areas including animal health, handling, medication use, and food safety.

Results

Over 400 youth successfully completed certification requirements, increasing knowledge of responsible livestock management and improving readiness for fair participation. The program strengthened consistency in project expectations and expanded access through multiple locations and flexible attendance.

By preparing youth to implement responsible livestock production practices, CSU Extension supports a safe, ethical, and sustainable food system while strengthening the future agricultural workforce in rural Colorado.
