Preparing Ahead for the School Year

Preparing and shopping for back to school are questions that families have at this time of the year. We have shared some shopping tips in ‘Back-to-School Shopping‘. This article focuses on other ways families need to get prepared for the beginning of a new school year.

Things to do before school starts

School Clothes

Inventory school clothes: including jackets, coats, boots, mittens, hats etc. It seems growth spurts happen towards the end of September, so plan for some larger sizes. Consider stocking up on some items that are lost frequently, such as mittens and socks. Stock up on more than one pair of gloves that are the same color so that they are easily interchangeable. Keep extras in the car for those busy mornings when the kids forget their gloves.

School Supplies

Make a list of school supplies that you already have. Remember, shortly after school starts many retailers have a sale on extra school supplies. Class supply lists are very similar year to year, so when items go on sale, stock up on basic supplies. Keep in mind that mid-year most students need to replace certain items that are used often. If you are struggling to buy supplies, call 211 United Way to ask about school supplies in your area.

School Lunch

Check the condition of your kids’ lunch box, ice packs, back pack, etc. Ice packs are very important for lunch boxes, so plan to have extras on hand. It is convenient to have several in the freezer. If one gets lost, or doesn’t make it back to the freezer, you have another ready to go.

Sports Physicals and Medical Check ups

It’s also a very busy time to get those sports physicals, dental check ups, eye exams, and immunizations scheduled.

Make going back to school fun and exciting. This excitement can help young people reduce anxiety and look forward to going back to school. I can smell the pencils and erasers from here.
