Using Reddit to Connect with Colorado Residents

Colorado residents often make poor landscaping decisions due to misinformation and limited access to research-based guidance. Many homeowners and renters rely on online platforms for advice but may struggle to identify credible, locally relevant information. This gap can lead to inefficient water use, poor plant selection, and long-term maintenance challenges. To remain effective, Colorado State University Extension must meet audiences where they seek information while increasing awareness of trusted educational resources and programming.

Colorado State University Extension hosted a statewide “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session on Reddit to provide real-time, research-based landscaping guidance. Extension specialists engaged directly with users across Colorado-focused subreddits, including r/DenverGardener, r/FortCollins, and r/Boulder. The AMA addressed common landscaping questions, helping participants make informed decisions about plant selection, water conservation, and sustainable practices. The effort also promoted a new educational webinar series, Landscape Like You Live Here, connecting participants to additional learning opportunities and Extension resources.

Results

The AMA generated significant engagement and expanded the reach of Colorado State University Extension programming. Extension professionals responded to 104 individual questions, delivering tailored, science-based recommendations. The posts were shared 197 times, amplifying outreach beyond the original threads. In total, the AMA achieved more than 60,000 impressions across multiple subreddits. This visibility increased awareness of Extension services and introduced a broad online audience to the Landscape Like You Live Here webinar series.

By using a widely accessed online platform, Colorado State University Extension increased access to reliable landscaping information at no cost. This approach helps residents make informed decisions that can reduce water use, avoid unnecessary expenses, and improve landscape sustainability. Expanding digital engagement also strengthens public awareness of Extension as a trusted resource and supports continued participation in educational programming across Colorado.
